Pineapple Railing, Conyers, GA
About five years ago, I built this railing for a client in Conyers who wanted something reminiscent of New Orleans. It has more of a Charleston feel to it, I guess, as I spent much of that year there teaching at the School of Building Arts and working on Washington Park.

I picked up on the pineapple lanterns used on either side of the door and capped the whole thing with brass. I was pleased with the overall look and enjoyed forging all the elements rather than using the usual out of the box junk prevalent in today's railing market. Along with being vastly inferior in quality, pre made elements confine the designer/blacksmith to using something anyone else can also use. If you want something really unique, it has to be handmade.

Adding brass finished off the formal effect and the railing spruces up that part of the business section of Conyers somewhat. I appreciated having clients who really appreciated what they got, as well, and who had the patience to wait for me to forge all those pieces. A railing like this would cost about $300 per linear foot.

Adding columns always cost more because I have to take the rail design and compress it into a tight circle. These brass downrails added alot to the final look of the job, as did the brass balls
